In Romans 1, the apostle Paul, formerly known as Saul, begins his epistle by emphasizing a crucial aspect of his identity and authority: His divine calling.

This calling was not a mere human endeavor but a profound encounter with Christ himself, as further revealed in Acts 9:15. This article will explore Romans 1 and Acts 9:15, shedding light on the significance of understanding one's divine calling and how it differs from aimless pursuits. We will also reference other biblical examples where individuals were called into their specific roles to emphasize the importance of being led by God alone.

The Divine Calling in Romans 1

In Romans 1:1, Paul identifies himself as "Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle." Here, he underscores the fact that his apostleship is not self-appointed but a result of a divine calling. This divine calling is a theme that runs throughout the New Testament, highlighting the unique nature of the apostles' mission. Let's delve into the importance of this divine calling.

The Authority of the Called

  • Paul's calling to be an apostle granted him spiritual authority to teach, preach, and lead within the early Christian community. This authority came directly from Christ, ensuring the authenticity of his message (Galatians 1:1):

Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)

  • Acts 9:15 confirms the divine nature of this calling when Christ sought Saul on the road to Damascus, stating, "He is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles." This encounter signifies a radical transformation in Saul's life, marking the beginning of his apostolic ministry.

A Lesson in Purpose

  • Understanding one's divine calling is a lesson in purpose. It prevents individuals from running aimlessly or pursuing goals driven solely by personal ambition.

  • Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand." Our calling aligns us with God's purpose, ensuring our efforts are not in vain.

Romans 1 and Acts 9:15 illustrate the profound importance of recognizing one's divine calling. Saul's transformation into the apostle Paul was not a result of his ambition but a divine encounter with Christ. This lesson extends beyond Paul's story, emphasizing the significance of purpose and divine guidance in our own lives. To avoid running aimlessly, we must seek God's calling, just as other biblical figures did, and trust in His divine plan for our lives.

Discerning one's calling, from a biblical perspective, involves seeking God's guidance and relying on various means of revelation and confirmation. While the specific process can vary for each person, here are some biblical principles and steps that can help in discerning your calling:

  1. Prayer and Seeking God's Will: Begin by spending time in prayer, seeking God's guidance and wisdom. In James 1:5, it says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." Prayer is a fundamental aspect of discerning God's will.

  2. Reading and Meditating on Scripture: The Bible is a source of divine wisdom and guidance. Studying and meditating on Scripture can help you align your desires and decisions with God's Word (Psalm 119:105). https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+119%3A105&version=VOICE

  3. Spiritual Gifts and Talents: God often equips individuals with specific gifts and talents that are intended to be used for His purposes. Discovering and utilizing your spiritual gifts can provide insight into your calling (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+12%3A4-11&version=VOICE

  4. Counsel from Mature Believers: Seek advice and counsel from mature Christians who can provide guidance and wisdom. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors, there is safety."

  5. Open and Closed Doors: Sometimes, God's calling becomes evident through opportunities that open up or close in your life. Acts 16:6-10 illustrates how the Apostle Paul and his companions were directed by the Holy Spirit through closed and open doors. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=+Acts+16%3A6-10&version=VOICE

  6. Inner Conviction and Peace: God can speak to you through a deep inner conviction or a sense of peace about a specific path or direction. Philippians 4:7 speaks of "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding."

  7. Confirming Signs: In some cases, God may provide confirming signs or experiences that affirm a particular calling. However, it's essential to exercise caution and discernment with this, as signs can be misinterpreted (Matthew 16:4). https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=%28Matthew+16%3A4&version=VOICE

  8. Long-Term Passion and Fruitfulness: Consider what you are passionate about and where you see fruitfulness in your efforts. Sometimes, God's calling aligns with your natural inclinations and interests.

  9. Testing and Confirming: Sometimes, it's necessary to step out in faith and test a potential calling. As you take steps in obedience, God may provide further confirmation through experiences and outcomes (Proverbs 3:5-6). https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+3%3A5-6&version=VOICE

  10. Patience and Waiting on God: Discerning your calling can be a process that requires patience. Trust in God's timing, and do not rush the discernment process (Psalm 27:14). https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=%28Psalm+27%3A14&version=VOICE

It's important to remember that discerning your calling is not always a straightforward or immediate process. It may involve periods of seeking, waiting, and testing. Additionally, seeking wise counsel from pastors, mentors, and fellow believers can be invaluable in this journey.

Ultimately, knowing your calling involves a deep relationship with God, a sensitivity to His leading, and a willingness to submit to His will, even when it may not align with your personal desires or plans. God's guidance and calling may evolve and become clearer over time as you continue to seek Him and His purpose for your life.
