The Idol Trap: How We Can Fall Prey to False Gods
Updated: May 3, 2023
The Bible clearly defines idols as anything that we put before God in our lives. In Exodus 20:3-5, it states, "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol...You shall not bow down to them or worship them." This commandment warns against the temptation to worship anything other than God, whether it be material possessions, relationships, careers, or even our own desires.

In our modern society, social media has become a common idol that distracts us from God's will. Psalm 115:4-8 warns, "Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak...Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them." This passage cautions against placing our trust in anything other than God, as it can lead us down a dangerous path.
Money and financial success are also common idols that can distract us from our relationship with God. 1 Timothy 6:
10 warns, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." This passage reminds us that the pursuit of wealth can lead us away from God and cause us to stumble.
In addition to these more obvious idols, our own pride and ego can also become false gods that we worship. Proverbs 16:18 warns, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." This verse highlights the danger of putting our own desires and ambitions before God's will for our lives.
The Bible warns against the dangers of idolatry and encourages us to prioritize our relationship with God above all else. When we seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33), we can avoid the trap of idol worship and keep our hearts and minds focused on His will for our lives.
